Ivosidenib works by blocking an abnormal enzyme that some cancer cells with specific changes in the IDH-1 gene make. Blocking the abnormal enzyme may make cancer cells differentiate to become more like normal cells and grow more slowly. Ivosidenib is a type of targeted therapy drug called an enzyme inhibitor. It is a small-molecule drug (a drug that can enter cells easily).

Use in Cancer
Ivosidenib is approved to treat adults whose cancer has a certain mutation in the IDH1 gene, including:
- Acute myeloid leukemia (AML). It is used:
- Alone or with azacitidine in patients with newly-diagnosed cancer who are 75 years or older or who cannot receive intensive induction chemotherapy due to health problems.
- When the cancer has come back or has not gotten better after previous treatment.
- Cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) that has spread. It is used in adults whose cancer has been treated.
- Myelodysplastic syndrome that has come back or did not respond to treatment.
Ivosidenib is also being studied in the treatment of other types of cancer.
